Explore Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the worlds youngest geothermal system, at your own pace with a range of options for all abilities and ambitions.
Walks vary in length from the 1.5km (allow 1 hour) highlights walk which cover most of the main geothermal features to a 4km (allow 2 hours) full walk which covers all geothermal features as well as the wetlands track through to Lake Rotomahana full of abundant bird life.
If you are looking for a bit more of an expedition you can opt for an invigorating climb over Mount Haszard to see magnificent panoramic views of the valley, this takes an additional half an hour.
Be sure to bring a sturdy pair of walking shoes for this track.
Transport from the cruise ship to this attraction is not included in the ticket cost, you will need to make your own arrangements.

Instructions
- Allow at least 2 hours visiting time
- Download the 'Waimangu' App before you arrive to view a range of hidden features and augmented reality during your visit.
- Easy walking tours along the Waimangu Crater walkways, which are mainly downhill and flat
- Last admission for highlight walk 1530 (1630 in January). 1430 for Full Walk.
- Optional easy hike on the Mt Haszard Trail (uphill bush trail)
- The Waimangu shuttle bus will return walkers to the Waimangu entrance from the end of their walk/hike.
- This is a self guided walking tour using the guidesheets provided when you arrive. An English speaking guide can be booked however requires a minimum of 72 hours notice. Please enquire directly with us in regard to availability and price.

I am in a wheelchair. Is it possible for me to get around on this walk?
Waimangu staff will meet you on arrival to assist you with arrangements. Please allow a little extra time for this.
We will help you access the safe, flat areas of the walking track where you will see many of the geothermal features. The Inferno Crater and the Mt Haszard Hiking trail are not suitable for wheelchairs.
Wheelchairs must be lightweight and able to fold up to access the shuttle buses and the Lake Rotomahana boat. For safety reasons, we cannot provide access to motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
Our shuttle buses do not have wheelchair lifts. You must be able to transfer from your wheelchair up steps onto the shuttle bus.
Wheelchair users must always be accompanied by at least one experienced wheelchair handler during the visit.
